Nobody’s in an office cafeteria from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, so a freezer that quits on Saturday sits there warming for two days before anyone opens the door. Herndon has plenty of weekday-only kitchens in the office parks and hotels off the Dulles Toll Road, and the person who finds the problem is often a facilities or property manager.
Ask whoever closes on Friday to write down each unit’s temperature on the way out. Then on Monday you at least know whether it was holding when the building emptied. Logs are covered on the temperature monitoring and compliance page.
Calling about a kitchen you don’t run? Tell us how the tech gets in, whether that’s a badge, the loading dock or an escort.
Smaller kitchens around Elden Street
Downtown, around Elden Street and Station Street, it’s mostly independent restaurants and cafes, many with a single walk-in holding everything. If yours is warm, see that the door closes on its own and the condenser coil isn’t coated in dust or grease. Then look up at the evaporator inside the box. Its fans should be turning. Tell us what you found when you call. Our post on the first hour after a walk-in fails covers what to do with the food in the meantime.
A hotel or office building with several boxes and ice machines is a good fit for a maintenance agreement. Coils and drains get cleaned, and the ice machines sanitized on a schedule, and the report after each visit lists anything that’s starting to wear.
